Trip 51
September 24, 2025
We had hoped for another activity today, but the weather didn’t cooperate. The forecast said 95% chance of rain, but fortunately, it only drizzled lightly a few times. But although we didn’t really have rain, the clouds descended lower into the valley, making going higher up in altitude (Grindelwald, Kleine Scheidegg, Mannlichen…) a pointless journey. Early in the morning, the clouds drifted through the mid altitudes where we are (4180’) , sometimes the clouds meant it was hard to see across the walkway to the other apartments, then minutes later, visibility was much better.
We heard the sounds of cow bells outside; not unusual here since they are always grazing in the area, but getting louder. Looking out from our balcony, we could see a farmer, his wife and three cows, making their way down the path directly in from of our building (YouTube)..
After breakfast, we decided to explore some of the upper parts of Wengen we had not seen in prior visits.

The pews in the chapel have numbered seats? The pfarrer (German for priest) is actually located in Lauterbrunnen.
The view to the valley below (Lauterbrunnen) from here was amazing.

Many, but not all, of the residences have the date they were built on the outside (and some with family names).

The new and the classic .

We made our way back down to the train station to go down to Lauterbrunnen for a few hours.

From Lauterbrunnen, look up to the Wengen side of the valley where there are pastures and not just a few farms that also make cheese (some host tours like we made many years ago).
The valley cemetery is located just across from Staubbach falls. We noticed a large area of the cemetery had been cleared out since we’re here last (there’s no eternity here). There’s a section with a memorial to base jumpers and paragliders who’ve met their deaths in the valley, and since we were here three years ago, three names have been added.

Continuing on, we walked down the valley past Camping Jungfrau (permanent campground) a bit further until it started to drizzle a bit more .

It’s getting late afternoon and we need to catch the train back up the mountain.
